As I say in the video below, washing your records is a good practice, and allows you to check for any damage. I love Miss Peggy Lee's singing voice, so was upset to find a 3 inch long edge crack on this shellac 78.

In the photo at left, the crack is on the edge at the 3:00 position.

Capitol 15022 "Manana", the second side, plays with less noise from the crack.
Another point of damage to check for are holes. This Mercury 70342 has quite a large hole on one side, making that side unplayable. I have placed tape over the hole, reminding myself not to play that side. The other side, "Padre" by Lola Dee plays fine.
